Description
Antonio II Gianlisi (attributed to) - Pair of still lifes with flowers, fruit and animals oil on canvas 77 x 89 cm
The two works, conceived as pendants, present still life compositions with flowers and fruit arranged on richly draped planes, enlivened by the presence of animal elements and decorative objects. One canvas features a composition with multicoloured flowers, including tulips and peonies, accompanied by bunches of grapes and apples next to a metal vase, with the presence of a small bird and a red drape adorned with golden fringes. In the other, the compositional layout is more vertically developed and includes an exotic parrot, a typical element of Baroque collecting taste, flanked by fruit and a vase, on a green drape with golden highlights. Both canvases are characterised by a dark background and drapery that creates scenic depth, with grazing light highlighting volumes and surfaces, according to a language that can be traced back to the Lombard naturalistic tradition influenced by both Caravaggism and Nordic painting. The style reveals a predominantly decorative purpose, with good rendering of materials and colours.Within 19th century gilded wooden frames.
