Description
Saint Rose of Lima adorning a statue of the Madonna and Child with the rosary Neapolitan school, mid-18th century oil on copper 17 x 14 cm A small devotional painting attributable to a Neapolitan painter of the mid-18th century, active in a sphere close to the figurative culture of Gaspare Traversi, whose sensitivity for the human and concrete rendering of the characters is recalled above all, although declined here in a simpler and more popular key. The work, executed in oil on copper, presents a recollected and intimist composition: in the foreground, a saint in a white dress, identifiable as Saint Rose of Lima, is depicted in the act of offering or placing a rosary beads on a statue of the Madonna and Child, placed on a decorated pedestal and surrounded by floral elements. The pictorial quality shows a certain attention to faces and gestures, with soft modelling and warm light emerging from the dark background, elements that recall the 18th-century Neapolitan tradition filtered through a workshop practice or private devotion. Particularly significant is the iconography, which is not canonical: instead of depicting the usual apparition of the Virgin handing over the rosary, the scene proposes a narrative inversion, in which it is the saint who performs an active gesture of homage towards a sacred image, thus configuring an episode of domestic and concrete devotion, rare and little codified but consistent with the popular spirituality of the time, which favours a direct and tangible relationship with the object of worship.Within a 19th-century frame.
