Description
Crivellone (attributed to) - Water birds in landscape oil on canvas 110 x 144 cm The large composition depicts an articulated group of water birds, storks, cranes, ducks and bustards, arranged within an open landscape of Arcadian taste. The work fits into the sphere of Lombard animalier painting between the 17th and 18th centuries and shows clear affinities with the production of Angelo Maria Crivelli, known as Crivellone, one of the main specialists of the genre active in northern Italy. Typical of his manner is the scenographic setting of the animals, depicted on a large scale and close up, almost as if they were the protagonists of a theatrical performance. Equally recognisable is the careful rendering of the different qualities of the plumage, described with naturalistic taste but still animated by Baroque sensibility. The composition finds balance in the rhythmic dialogue between the long silhouettes of the storks and cranes and the more compact masses of the other birds, while the soft, atmospheric light helps to blend the figures with the landscape behind. Within a 19th century frame.
