Description
Master of the Blue Mountains (attributed to) - Lake Landscape with Bridge and Fishermen oil on canvas 101 x 131 cm Landscape of Arcadian taste depicting a wide basin of water crossed by a wooden bridge, animated by small figures of fishermen and travellers, with rural buildings and ruins distributed along the banks. The composition is built according to a scenographic layout typical of the 18th-century Italian landscape: a backlit backdrop of trees occupies the left side of the scene, while the background opens up to a succession of mountains in atmospheric blue-grey tones. The bright sky, traversed by vaporous clouds, contributes to the effect of perspective depth and natural idealisation. The work has characteristics that can be traced back to the production attributed to Pietro Antonio Domenichini, in particular for the use of mountainous distances rendered in cold, transparent tones, for the theatrical construction of the landscape space and for the presence of minute narrative figures immersed in nature. The luministic sensitivity and compositional layout show affinities with the Veneto and Emilian landscape culture of the 18th century. The canvas, re-lined, has an old paper label on the reverse bearing the inscription 'R. Galleria Borghese - Rome' with a partially legible handwritten annotation and an unidentified date. The presence of the initials "R." ("Regia") suggests a chronology prior to 1946 for the label itself and probably testifies to the work's passage through the Galleria Borghese.
