Jacopo da Empoli (attributed to) – Still Life with Game, Meat, Cured Meats, Vegetables, Fruit and Tableware Oil on canvas, 77 x 114 cm This large composition depicts a bountiful larder of game, meats, vegetables and household objects, arranged on several levels in a dense and highly descriptive composition. Poultry and small birds are placed alongside quarters of meat and hanging cured meats, loaves of bread, fruit and vegetables, whilst containers, straw-bound flasks, ceramics and household items punctuate the scene with a lively interplay of shapes and materials.The painting is part of the tradition of Florentine still life from the early decades of the seventeenth century and shows clear affinities with the work of Jacopo Chimenti, known as ‘l’Empoli’, one of the leading figures in the emergence of the genre in Tuscany. Particularly characteristic is the composition of the scene through a succession of isolated objects set against a dark background, upon which light falls selectively, bringing out surfaces and volumes. The abundance of food and the almost encyclopaedic nature of the depiction bring the work close to those large ‘pantry’ compositions that developed in the Florentine art scene between the late sixteenth century and the first half of the seventeenth century, in which Empoli’s work served as one of the fundamental points of reference. Framed.
