Portrait of a Gentleman with a Book and an Inkwell Venetian School, 17th century oil on canvas 96.5 x 74 cm The painting depicts a mature gentleman in half-length portrait, dressed in a sombre dark suit trimmed with fur, set against a neutral background. On the table are an open book and an inkwell with a quill, attributes which suggest that the subject may be a man of letters, a jurist or, in any case, a figure associated with scholarship.Although chronologically attributable to the 17th century, the work shows a clear adherence to the models of the great Venetian portraiture of the late 16th century, and in particular to the tradition that developed around Titian and his circle, recognisable in the solemn composition of the figure, the dark background, the restrained colour scheme and the ability to convey the subject’s rank and personality through his pose and attributes.The composition of the face, the solemn tone of the portrait and the prominent presence of the fur coat indeed recall sixteenth-century portraiture conventions that were still widely adopted and reinterpreted throughout the seventeenth century.
