Portrait of a Young Woman Dutch School, 17th century oil on panel 25.3 x 19.1 cm The painting depicts a young woman in half-length portrait, facing the viewer, with one hand raised to her chest as she gently holds a brooch. The austerity of the dark dress is softened by the large, finely crafted white cape and the snow-white cuffs; subtle green accents recur in the small bow above the brooch, on the sleeves and in the bow adorning her hair.The work is fully in keeping with the culture of Dutch portraiture of the mid-17th century and shows significant affinities with the work of Gerard ter Borch the Younger (1617–1681), both in the intimate composition of the figure and in the choice of a deliberately restrained colour palette, which plays on the contrast between the light background, the dark dress and the pearlescent tones of the skin and fabrics.A particularly significant comparison can be drawn with Gerard ter Borch’s *Portrait of a Woman*, held at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, inv. SK-A-403, which features a similar half-length composition, the wide, light-coloured collar superimposed on the dark gown, the subtle red chromatic accents and the same attention to the rendering of the fabrics and the complexion. The work in the Rijksmuseum, executed in oil on copper and signed ‘GTB’, is also documented in the Hofstede de Groot catalogue, 1913, no. 371.In this portrait, the restrained pose, the gaze directed towards the viewer and the measured gesture of the hand lend the figure that understated elegance and intimate quality characteristic of the portraiture that developed around Ter Borch and his circle in the second half of the seventeenth century. The meticulous rendering of the costume, particularly the embroidered cape and the cuffs, is one of the work’s finest qualities. Set in a contemporary frame.
