John Baptist de Medina (circle of) – Portrait of James VII of Scotland and II of England Oil on canvas 127 x 102 cm The sovereign is depicted in half-length portrait, dressed in military attire, wearing armour, a large ringed wig and an elaborate lace jabot, whilst holding a staff of command. In the background, beyond a large curtain, a seascape unfolds featuring a sailing vessel, a reference to James Stuart’s long military and naval career; before his accession to the throne, as Duke of York, he held the office of Lord High Admiral. In other official portraits of the future James II, too, the armour, the baton of command and the maritime elements are used to emphasise his role as a commander.The identification of the subject finds a particularly interesting parallel in a composition traditionally attributed to the circle of John Baptist de Medina, which also depicts James VII of Scotland and II of England against a naval backdrop, featuring the three-quarter pose, the large wig, the jabot and the sceptre. James Stuart (1633–1701), brother of Charles II, ascended the throne in 1685 as James II of England and Ireland and James VII of Scotland; he occupies a central place in the history of the Stuart dynasty and in the events leading up to the Glorious Revolution of 1688 and the subsequent exile of the Stuart court. The work is part of late 17th-century British portraiture and shows affinities with the style of Sir John Baptist de Medina, a painter born in Brussels who moved to London around 1686 and subsequently settled in Edinburgh, where he became one of the leading exponents of Scottish aristocratic portraiture.
