Lamentation over the Dead Christ Neapolitan School, 17th century oil on canvas 180 x 246 cm The painting depicts the lifeless body of Christ lying on a stone and surrounded by mourners. The composition, dense and monumental, is centred on the luminous figure of Christ, whose pale complexion stands out strikingly against the brown background, whilst the Virgin and the onlookers participate in the drama with intense yet restrained gestures.The work is fully in keeping with the culture of Neapolitan naturalism of the first half of the seventeenth century, showing a marked influence of Ribera. The vigorous anatomical modelling, the strong contrast of light and shadow, the dense paint texture and, above all, the penetrating characterisation of the faces—such as that of the elderly figure on the left, lost in deep meditation—all point to the influence of Jusepe de Ribera.Of particular note is the earlier attribution proposed by Achille della Ragione, who in 2024 published this very painting as a work by Cesare Fracanzano, having examined it first-hand in a private collection in Turin. The scholar highlighted its ‘thick, lumpy colours’, the materiality of the colour scheme, the dark background and the evident references to Ribera’s style, placing the work in an intermediate phase of the artist’s career, following his entry into Ribera’s workshop.Whilst taking into account della Ragione’s authoritative proposal, the work is here cautiously attributed to the 17th-century Neapolitan School, whilst nevertheless highlighting its close affinities with the work of Cesare Fracanzano and, more generally, with the artistic milieu that developed in Naples around Ribera’s teachings.Bibliography: A. della Ragione, ‘A Stupendous Deposition by Cesare Fracanzano’, 25 March 2024, online publication.
