David with the Head of Goliath; Bolognese School, second half of the 17th century; oil on canvas, 118 x 98 cm The young David is depicted in half-length, his upper body bare, wrapped in a large, fur-lined drapery and his head covered by a red cap adorned with a large feather. With a calm gesture, he rests his hand on the forehead of Goliath’s severed head, placed in the foreground upon a parapet, near the hilt of his sword. His downcast gaze and pensive expression lend the scene a meditative quality, far removed from the strictly heroic emphasis of the subject. The soft modelling of the flesh tones, the idealised face of the young man, the light gradually emerging from the dark background, and the elegant colour harmony between the red of the headdress, the white of the drapery and the brown tones of the fur link the work to the pictorial tradition of Guercino from the second half of the seventeenth century.The connections with the work of the Gennari family appear particularly strong, especially with Cesare and Benedetto Gennari, who were among the most faithful interpreters of Giovanni Francesco Barbieri’s late style, from which they draw the gentle facial features, the smoothness of the paint and that deeply contemplative tone which also characterises this painting.
