Salomon Adler (attributed to) – Portrait of a Man Wearing a Cap oil on canvas 77 x 63 cm The painting depicts a young man in half-length portrait, captured in a casual pose and facing the viewer directly. The figure is wearing a soft ochre-coloured cap and a dark robe, over which drapes a large brown-and-gold cloth, held casually by his right hand.The work displays characteristics fully attributable to the portraiture of Salomon Adler, a painter of Nordic origin who was active mainly in Milan and Bergamo during the second half of the 17th century. Particularly significant are the strong play of light on the face against the dark background, the warm colour palette dominated by browns and ochres, and the deliberately informal nature of the clothing – recurring elements in the artist’s portraits.Adler developed his own personal interpretation of Lombard portraiture, enriched by influences from Northern European painting and, in particular, the Rembrandtian tradition. His paintings frequently feature caps, turbans, dressing gowns and ample drapery, used to lend the figures a more intimate and unconventional air compared to contemporary official portraiture.In this painting, too, the focus is primarily on the psychological rendering of the subject: the face, defined through soft brushstrokes and a warm, gradual light, retains a remarkable immediacy, whilst the neutral background eliminates all superfluous elements and accentuates the figure’s presence.The close-up composition, the compositional restraint and the interplay between the luminous skin tone and the deep hues of the garments are all clearly reflected in Adler’s known works.
