Landscape with Dancing Figures near a Castle Flemish School, second half of the 17th century Oil on canvas 132 x 181 cm A vast landscape of a fantastical nature, dominated on the right by an elaborate fortified complex with towers, bridges and geometric gardens, whilst in the background a mountain range frames the view. In the foreground, groups of elegantly dressed figures enliven the scene with dances and moments of pastoral leisure, flanked by shepherds and flocks. The work forms part of the tradition of 17th-century Flemish landscape painting, characterised by the fusion of naturalistic observation and scenographic invention. The composition in successive planes, the meticulous depiction of the architecture and vegetation, together with the presence of small figures set within the landscape, reflect the style of the Flemish painters active between Antwerp and Italy, who were particularly drawn to the Italianate landscape style and to idealised views enlivened by scenes of a pastoral and courtly nature.
