Idealised view of a villa with architectural features, garden and figures; Roman School, late 17th – early 18th century; oil on canvas, 40 x 38 cm An elegant architectural caprice set within a complex villa garden, punctuated by terraces, balustrades, staircases and monumental ornamental features. At the centre of the composition stands a building in the classical style, whilst large vases, sculptures and small figurative scenes enliven the space in accordance with a scenographic approach typical of Roman painting between the late 17th and the first half of the 18th century.The perspective composition, constructed through a succession of sloping planes, and the taste for monumental architecture place the work within the tradition of the Roman capriccio, which developed within the cultural sphere of Giovanni Ghisolfi and Alberto Carlieri and was later established by Giovanni Paolo Panini.Set within a gilded wooden frame, of French manufacture dating from a later period than the painting itself.
