François Boucher (circle of) – Odalisque – oil on canvas, 54 × 67 cm The work is based, with some variations, on François Boucher’s famous composition, *L’Odalisque brune*, painted in 1745 and now in the collection of the Musée du Louvre in Paris. Boucher’s painting, an oil on canvas measuring 53.5 × 64.5 cm, is one of the best-known examples of the artist’s intimate and libertine body of work.The pose of the young woman reclining in the foreground – shown from behind and resting amongst cushions and drapery – derives directly from the original, as do the close-up framing and the sensual nature of the scene. In this painting, however, the composition has been reworked through a number of variations. The success of Boucher’s invention was already considerable in the 18th century: the existence of studies and copies based on the ‘Odalisque’ model bears witness to the early dissemination of the composition. Framed.
