View of the Forum Boarium with the Temple of Hercules Victor Artist active in Rome, 1853 Oil on canvas 29 x 39 cm The painting depicts a view of the Forum Boarium in Rome, dominated by the famous circular temple now identified as the Temple of Hercules Victor, traditionally known until the nineteenth century as the Temple of Vesta. In the background, the urban fabric of the area can be seen, brought to life in the foreground by ordinary people gathered around an ox-drawn cart.The composition belongs to the successful tradition of nineteenth-century Roman cityscapes linked to the culture of the Grand Tour, in which the depiction of ancient monuments is enlivened by scenes of everyday life.
