Cesare Mussini (attributed to) – Allegory of the Triumph of Truth. Oil on canvas, 113 cm The painting depicts a complex allegorical scene dominated by the nude female figure at the centre, bathed in light and in the act of lifting a large veil, likely representing Truth. Surrounding her are winged figures and allegorical personifications, whilst in the lower part there is a monstrous figure entwined by snakes, representing the realm of Error, Falsehood or Vices.The work displays characteristics typical of a sketch intended for a larger-scale decorative composition, as also suggested by the inscription on the reverse, which attributes it to Cesare Mussini and indicates that it was intended for a fresco.With a gilded wooden frame, carved with grapevines and partially polychrome, Florentine workmanship, first half of the 19th century.
