Description
BERNARD ZIEGLER (artist from Dole in the Jura) "Dance of Death at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels on 29 May 1985"/ Signed oil on canvas. 162 x 114 cm. The Heysel tragedy, which took place on 29 May 1985 at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels (Belgium), involved a mass brawl and a stampede that resulted in the deaths of 39 people and left 465 injured[1]. It is one of the most memorable tragedies associated with a sporting event. It was caused by English hooliganism. It is also one of Belgium’s worst disasters. It took place during the 1984–85 European Cup final between Liverpool and Juventus. The death toll was exacerbated in particular by the collapse of the dividing fences and a low wall under the pressure and weight of the supporters.
