One day, whilst her mother was suffering from a terrible and seemingly incurable illness, the young Lucy began to pray to the Virgin Mary in the hope of a miraculous recovery. She then went to the tomb of Saint Agatha to pray fervently. That very night, Lucy had a vision. Saint Agatha appeared to her in a dream to tell her that her mother had been healed. Her prayers having been answered, Lucy decided to dedicate her virginity to the saint who had helped heal her mother. Her religious fervour was such that she gouged out her own eyes and threw them into the sea in order to ward off any suitor who might seek to seduce her and thus lead her astray from her faith. She is said to have performed a great many miracles. In response to her exceptional devotion, the Virgin Mary appeared one day to restore her eyes to her – eyes even more beautiful and radiant with grace than those she had before (“Ochji belli e lucenti”). Since then, it is said that the Saint’s true eyes are hidden amongst the shells.
