Description
Suzanne RAMIÉ Lamp – circa 1960 Glazed ceramic ‘Madoura Plein Feu’ under the base (stamped) Height: 35 cm (without lampshade) Glazed ceramic; stamped Height: 13.78 in. (without lampshade) Suzanne Ramié was one of the key figures in the post-war revival of ceramics in Vallauris. Born in Lyon in 1905, she began her studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, where she specialised in decoration and ceramics. There, she was awarded the triennial prize presented by the Ministry of Industry. During the Second World War, she adopted the pseudonym Madoura, under which she would sign all her works. Her success was remarkable and gradually gained momentum: she exhibited for the first time in Cannes in 1941, then in Paris in 1946 at the Salon d’Automne. Her influence quickly spread beyond France’s borders. She gained an international reputation by exhibiting in major cities such as Tokyo, Mexico City, London and Cairo. Renowned for her respect for the clay and the simplicity of her forms, Suzanne Ramié imbued her creations with great purity whilst celebrating Provençal pottery. She placed the material at the heart of her works. Her studio became a magnet for the great artists of the time. Picasso himself settled in Vallauris and received tuition in ceramics from her.
