Born in Vallauris on 4 December 1905, Jules Agard is reputed to be one of the finest potters of the golden age of the ‘village of a hundred potters’. He began his training at the age of 16 at Jérôme Massier’s workshop, where he worked alongside the many potters in the studio, each specialising in a particular type of form. Thanks to his keen eye for detail – ‘this craft cannot be learnt, it must be observed’, as the young Agard used to say – he became a seasoned potter within a few years. In the late 1930s, the crisis in the domestic pottery industry led to him losing his job; in 1938–1939 he found a post as a potter specialising in forms at Suzanne Ramié’s Madoura workshop. From 1947 onwards, Picasso worked regularly at the workshop and needed a dedicated potter: Agard quite naturally secured this position. He remained ‘Picasso’s potter’ for twenty-two years. Jules Agard left Madoura in 1970 and, until the end of his life, devoted himself to his own work at the Poterie des Noisetiers, in the Vallauris countryside: vases, dishes and, above all, a bestiary of skilfully distorted forms, coated in the varied and colourful engobes that are his hallmark.
