Ewen Henderson was a British sculptor and ceramicist. It was in 1964, whilst taking a foundation course at Goldsmiths College in London, that he discovered clay, before completing his training at the Camberwell School of Art under the guidance of masters such as Hans Coper and Lucie Rie. His style is characterised by an early rejection of the potter’s wheel in favour of hand-building, which he considered better suited to expressing the dynamism and asymmetry of nature. Henderson employed a complex layering technique, blending different types of clay, porcelain and bone china with oxides to create rough, blistered and almost volcanic surfaces. Alongside his artistic practice, Henderson enjoyed a distinguished teaching career at Camberwell for thirty years, influencing many contemporary ceramicists. His works, often inspired by British geological landscapes and megalithic sites, are now held in the world’s leading institutions, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo.
