Born in 1958 in Washington, Beverly Semmes is an American artist based in New York. She trained at the Boston Museum School, the Skowhegan School of
Painting and Sculpture and the New York Studio School, before obtaining an MFA in sculpture from the Yale School of Art in 1987. From the late 1980s onwards, she turned her attention to
sculpture, and in particular to clay. In the early 1990s, she made a name for herself with her oversized dresses, the fabric of which draped across the floor – installations in which she most often incorporated her clay pieces. Reminiscent of art brut, these deliberately rough-hewn ceramics bear the marks of the hand and feature multiple points of grip, as if they were meant to be grasped. From 2011 onwards, she developed the Feminist Responsibility Project, exhibited notably at the Tang Teaching Museum and the Weatherspoon Art Museum. In these works, ceramic and crystal sculptures engage in a dialogue with images of female bodies obscured by paint, furthering her exploration of the representation of women as mothers, objects of desire and fetishes. The Galerie Lefebvre et Fils presented a selection of these works for the first time in France in the exhibition *Handle*. Her work is held in the collections of the Whitney Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Hirshhorn Museum and the Walker Art Centre, amongst others.
