Harumi Nakashima is a post-war Japanese artist born in 1950. His technique is the result of entirely manual work, combining meticulous gestures with great delicacy. Using porcelain as his primary material, every movement he makes must be of the utmost precision. The artist must constantly strike a balance between creative intent and the risk of breakage to give form to his biomorphic sculptures, adorned with blue polka-dot motifs. His works are part of the Japanese Sometsuke tradition, characterised by cobalt blue appearing in delicate dotted patterns. This traditional inspiration links him to the Sodeisha movement, founded in 1948 in the post-war context. However, Nakashima transcends this movement by adopting a resolutely modern approach. Unlike the Sometsuke tradition, the artist paints the blue motifs only at the end of the main firing; once the blue has been applied, the porcelain is fired a second time, allowing the glazes to fuse and thus producing a smooth finish.
