Provenance: Besson Gallery, London Acquired from the gallery by the current owner Exhibitions: London, Besson Gallery, Ryoji Koie New work in porcelain, 9 September to 15 October 1998 Ryoji Koie is a Japanese ceramicist, regarded as one of the most avant-garde artists of his time. Born in 1938 in Tokoname, he began producing his own ceramics at the age of 20. Self-taught, he developed a unique approach, experimenting with earth, raw clay and found objects such as clocks and electronic circuits, in keeping with the abstract expressionism of Jackson Pollock and the spirit of the Japanese Mono-ha movement. Refusing to be confined by the traditional framework of ceramics, Koie moves freely between techniques – including raku, soda firing and wood-firing – and styles, ranging from the brilliant green of Oribe to the organic browns of the anagama kiln. The recipient of numerous honours, including the Japan Ceramic Society Prize in 1992 and the Grand Prize at the Japan Society Award in 2008, his work is now held in the collections of the Smithsonian, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Centre Pompidou, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Seoul Metropolitan Museum of Art.
