Machiko Ogawa was born in 1946 in Sapporo, Japan. A renowned contemporary ceramic artist, her work is deeply influenced by her travels and by her lifelong fascination with the natural world. After studying crafts at Tokyo University of the Arts, she specialised in ceramics at the École nationale supérieure des arts appliqués et des métiers d’art in Paris. In 1972, Ogawa settled in Burkina Faso, where she lived for several years, immersing herself in local ceramic techniques and further developing her craft. Her work reflects an ongoing exploration of geological processes, drawing inspiration from minerals, rocks and the forces that shape the Earth. Ogawa’s ceramics embrace natural properties such as deformation, cracking, chipping and glaze flow, thereby creating utsuwa (vessels) that capture the dichotomy between creation and destruction, with each piece exuding a sense of primordial power. During his stay in Paris, his visits to the Musée de Minéralogie des Mines deepened his conviction that ‘form already exists’ within the beauty of minerals. Ogawa’s works are held in prestigious collections, including those of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; the Guimet Museum; the Victoria and Albert Museum; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the MET; the Brooklyn Museum; and the Art Institute of Chicago.
