Originally from Kyoto, Kazuo Takiguchi is an internationally renowned ceramic artist and a successor to the Sodeisha avant-garde movement. A graduate of Japanese universities and the Royal College of Art in London, he broke with functional tradition to devote himself to creating abstract biomorphic sculptures. His work is characterised by a unique modelling technique involving the manipulation of large sheets of extremely fine clay, folded or draped over moulds to create organic forms full of tension. Winner of prestigious awards such as the Grand Prix at the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition (1989) and the MOA Museum Mokichi Okada Award, Takiguchi’s work is now held in major collections worldwide, notably at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
