Born in 1936 in Shigaraki, a historic centre of ceramic production in Japan, Yasuhisa Kohyama played a pivotal role in the revival of the traditional Japanese wood-fired ‘anagama’ kiln, being the first potter in the region to build one since the Middle Ages. He is a contemporary master of the ancient ‘Sueki’ technique, a method originating in southern China, which accounts for the unglazed yet vitreous surface textures of his works. Kohyama’s works are held in international collections and are widely exhibited in Japan and abroad. His works are notably held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Art and Design in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Denver Art Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art… as well as in several museums in the Netherlands and Germany.
