Description
Jacques BLIN Vase – design created around 1960 Glazed earthenware Signed ‘JBlin’ incised beneath the base Height: 27 cm Glazed earthenware; signed ‘JBlin’ under the base Height: 10.63 in. Jacques Blin is one of the leading figures in post-war French ceramics. Born in 1920 in Pierrefonds, in the Oise department, he trained in the aeronautical and automotive industries and initially worked as an engineer, before devoting himself entirely to ceramics in 1949. His early pieces, often monochrome, feature dynamic forms inspired by the natural world and accessible to the general public. His meeting with the painter Jean Rustin in 1955 marked a decisive turning point: Jacques devised the designs, whilst Jean engraved them. This collaboration gave rise to incised designs on cloud-like glaze, adorned with birds, animals and human figures, which became his signature style. His works are characterised by organic forms and a poetic world drawing on myths and primitive arts. This work earned him the Grand Prix Bernard-Palissy in 1958, in recognition of what his biographer Christine Lavenu describes as works inspired by rock art. In the 1980s, he moved to Provence, where he discovered the richness of the local ochres and experimented with plant-based earth dyes, drawing his inspiration from the seasons and gardens. He died in 1995, leaving behind a unique and instantly recognisable body of work, now represented in particular at the Musée de Sèvres, where the collection includes, amongst other pieces, a tobacco pot and other items from the donation made by his widow.
