Martine Damas enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Reims in the 1970s to study ceramics. After completing her training, she set up her studio in Villeneuve in the Aveyron in 1981. She very quickly became interested in geometric abstraction, a movement that emerged around 1911 with Piet Mondrian, who theorised about the interactions between colours. It was the painter Joseph Albers (1888–1976) who had the greatest influence on Martine Damas. Joseph Albers’ work and theories inspired Martine Damas’ series, launched in 2000 and entitled ‘Hommage à la Sphère’. Here, she creates a three-dimensional painting in ceramics: the coloured clay itself creates the form. The through-coloured clay she has developed allows her to ‘paint’ directly onto a simple, domed plaster mould. The material is applied layer upon layer until the thickness is sufficient. The colour and material define both the form and the decoration: these very fine layers of colour, applied with a brush in broad bands, differ on the inside from those on the outside.
