Martine Damas enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Reims in the 1970s to study ceramics. After completing her training, she set up her studio in Villeneuve, in the Aveyron, in 1981. She very quickly became interested in geometric abstraction, a movement that emerged around 1911 with Piet Mondrian, who theorised about the interactions between colours. It was the painter Joseph Albers (1888–1976) who had the greatest influence on Martine Damas. Joseph Albers’ work and theories inspired Martine Damas’ series, launched in 2000 and titled ‘Hommage à la Sphère’. Here, she creates a three-dimensional painting in ceramic: the coloured clay itself forms the shape. The through-coloured clay she has developed allows her to ‘paint’ directly onto a simple, hump-shaped plaster mould. The material is applied layer upon layer until the thickness is sufficient. The colour and material define both the form and the decoration: these very fine layers of coloured material, applied with a brush in broad strokes, are not the same on the inside as on the outside.
