Jacques Dessauvage, known as Tjok Dessauvage, born on 15 April 1948 in Izegem, Belgium, is regarded as one of the leading exponents of sigillata pottery in Europe. As a child, he closely observed the archaeological excavation sites located next to his school and developed a particular interest in the Roman ceramic and pottery shards unearthed there. He later enrolled at the Hoger Instituut in Ghent, where he undertook a foundation year in ceramics and learnt wheel-throwing and then glazing under Joost Maréchal, a pioneer of contemporary ceramics. His world of forms and symbols takes shape in experimental pottery workshops, based on three elementary basic forms: the hemisphere, the cylinder and the cone. He succeeds in imbuing these volumes, fashioned on the potter’s wheel, with an inner tension. Through the use of ancient techniques, notably terra sigillata, the clay brings human history to the fore without any artificial archaism.
