Betty Woodman revolutionised post-war American art by elevating traditional ceramics to the status of contemporary, sculptural and multimedia art.
A graduate of the School for American Craftsmen at Alfred University, she began her career in the 1950s as a potter of functional ware before settling in Boulder, Colorado. Her work blends painting, architecture and everyday objects, drawing inspiration from Roman frescoes, the Renaissance, as well as Matisse and Bonnard. In 2006, she made history by becoming the first living female artist to be honoured with a retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Her international influence is evident through major exhibitions, such as those at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (1996), the Museu Nacional do Azulejo in Lisbon (2005) and the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London (2016). Having been awarded several honorary doctorates, her work is now held in over ninety public collections, including those of MoMA and the Victoria and Albert Museum, confirming her status as an icon of modern art.
