Last time, it was so spontaneous and easy, whereas now, there are all these expectations and I’m not very comfortable with social obligations . 16 November to 21 December 2019. Born in 1985 in Västerås, Sweden, his artistic exploration of this subject is as emotional as it is subjective, and resonates with the viewer on that level too. The initially animal-like figures in his ceramic and bronze sculptures and his charcoal drawings not only possess human features, but also reflect deeply human emotions. In their childlike and naïve execution, they initially seem amusing, before subtle disruptive elements fracture the scenes. How are hierarchies formed, and what determines an individual’s position, whether superior or inferior? Why do we strive to be part of a society, even if we feel like outsiders within it? In his works, the artist – who studied at Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design – seeks a way to express his own feelings and thoughts, which are difficult to put into words. Despite – or perhaps precisely because of – their personal nature, they possess a kind of striking universal validity. Joakim OJANEN
