Albert Diato was a versatile Monegasque artist (ceramist, painter, engraver and poet) whose career took a radical turn following his encounter
with Pablo Picasso in Vallauris in 1947. Abandoning his studies in dentistry and philosophy, he founded the Atelier du Triptyque in 1948 with Francine Del Pierre and Gilbert Portanier, where he began transforming clay into anthropomorphic and zoomorphic forms. He honed his craft in Faenza, Italy, and later in Afghanistan (1967–1971), where he worked as an expert to revive the local pottery tradition in Istalif whilst also creating works for King Zaher Shah. In Paris, living in the Cité Véron amongst a prestigious intellectual circle that included Jacques Prévert and Jean-Paul Sartre, he developed his iconic series such as the ‘Oiseaux nyctalopes’ and his feminine-shaped bowls. Honoured with major international awards, including the Ostend Gold Medal and first prize in the Faenza competition, Diato left a legacy that is now celebrated in major institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
