Born in 1993 in Reseda, in the San Fernando Valley, Sharif Farrag grew up amidst skate parks, the graffiti culture so characteristic of California, and his parents’ Syrian-Egyptian heritage. A graduate of the University of Southern California in 2018, he was an artist-in-residence at the Centre for Contemporary Ceramics at Cal State Long Beach from 2018 to 2020, attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2019, and went on to obtain an MFA in ceramics from UCLA in 2023. His grotesque, cartoon-like creatures—halfway between an ancient guardian and an underground comic character—place the artist firmly within the tradition of Californian Funk, which he blends with forms from Egypt and the Levant, American Egyptomania, skate culture and a strictly personal mythology. Each vase can be viewed from all angles, like a layered world. A recipient of a United States Artists Fellowship, Sharif Farrag has held solo exhibitions at François Ghebaly, in lieu and New Image Art in Los Angeles, and subsequently at Jeffrey Deitch in New York (Hybrid Moments, 2025). His works are held in the collections of the Museum of Arts and Design in New York and the Hammer Museum
