Born in 1978 in the county of Suffolk, James B. Webster grew up in the Norfolk countryside, captivated by the mythological tales his grandfather used to tell him. After studying art history in Norwich, he moved to Florence for classical training in sculpture, where he became an apprentice to Marianne Luchetti. On his return to the UK, his first solo exhibition at the Rivington Gallery in London, in 2008, already marked a break with this academic heritage. Driven by a fascination with anatomy, Webster then retreated to his native Suffolk, where he spent long months in isolation in his studio, observing his subjects and honing his mastery of ceramics. His work,
drawn from Greek mythology and the natural world, also reinterprets the classical conventions of the collector’s bust, which he subverts to capture anonymous figures in moments of everyday vulnerability, far removed from the virile gravitas typically expected of the genre. In Greek mythology, Marsyas is a Phrygian satyr known for his musical talent and his tragic punishment after challenging the god Apollo. Since 2020, he has also been developing ‘Love Tokens’, a more sensual series exploring eroticism and the tension between bodies.
