Stoneware, porcelain and wood
Diameter: 35.44 in.
Born in 1983, Étienne Pottier lives and works in Paris. A graduate of the École nationale supérieure des Arts décoratifs in 2009, he initially explored graphic novels, printmaking and photography, before discovering ceramics during an almost chance visit to a studio in Saint-Denis. Drawing on influences as diverse as Albrecht Dürer, El Greco, punk and biker subcultures, and art brut, Pottier creates a dark and whimsical world, populated by masks, snakes, armour and fantastical creatures. Deeply attached to the legacy of Bernard Palissy, to whom he claims a direct line of descent, he composes scenes featuring plants and animals where violence always lurks beneath the beauty, in a constant tension between fascination and dread. Winner of the ICART Artistik Rezo Prize in 2016 and the ICART Prize in 2018, he regularly exhibits in solo and group shows, notably at the Galerie LJ (Paris), the Galerie DYS (Brussels) and the Villa Noailles (Nice), and his work is represented in Paris, Brussels, Denmark and New York, at the Maison Gerard.
