Description
Carolein SMIT Two Headed Lamb – 2010 Glazed stoneware 33 × 47 × 40 cm Glazed stoneware 13 × 18.51 × 15.75 in. Provenance: Jonathan Kugel Gallery, Brussels Acquired from the gallery by the current owner Carolein Smit was born in 1960 in the Netherlands. Her work forms part of the revival of contemporary figurative sculpture. Trained in graphic design and printmaking, she turned to ceramics in the late 1990s, a medium through which she engages with the long history of Western sculpture. Inspired by myths, monsters, fairy tales and legends, Carolein Smit crafts animals and creatures from porcelain or stoneware that immerse the viewer in a dreamlike world, imbued with strangeness and refinement. Her fascination with ancient eras, from the Middle Ages to the Baroque period, is clearly evident in her work, as is her love of cabinets of curiosities, jewellery and precious materials. She readily navigates the boundaries between reality, mythology and popular religious iconography, exploring all forms of beauty through her animal sculptures. The piercing eyes of birds of prey, the familiar expressions of monkeys, and the endearing appearance of pugs, bulldogs or hunting dogs all contribute to this impression. Each creature rests on a plinth or ornate pedestal, gilded or decorated with natural motifs in the style of Bernard Palissy, and is adorned with bright, vibrant colours. An internationally renowned ceramicist, Carolein Smit now lives in Belgium. Her sculptures feature in several international collections, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Drents Museum in Assen, the Grassi Museum in Leipzig, the Koç Collection in Istanbul, the Asante Collection in Switzerland, the Olbricht Collection in Germany, the Treger/Saint-Silvestre Collection in Portugal and the Fuled International Museum (FLICAM) in Fuping, China.
