Born in 1972 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Clémentine de Chabaneix grew up surrounded by art. After studying theatre, she learnt drawing, painting and sculpture at the École Pradier, then assisted the designer Hilton McConnico on Hermès exhibitions. Clémentine de Chabaneix moulds glazed clay, to which she sometimes adds branches or flowers created using electroplating – a technique passed down through the generations by her mother, who in turn learnt it from Claude Lalanne. Her world is populated by a young woman and her poetic companions—such as frogs, rabbits, cats, bears, flowers and even a wolf’s mask—all entwined, camouflaged and sometimes blending into one another. Men are absent from this world. The result is a parallel world free from predators, governed by care and tenderness, where the terrors of childhood also surface beneath the softness of the enamels. Commissioned to create installations in prestigious venues, notably during the Fondation Cartier’s ‘Soirées Nomades’, Clémentine de Chabaneix lives and works in Paris. She is represented by galleries in Paris, Liège, Nantes, Rome and Los Angeles.
