Passionate about drawing from the age of 16, Raphaël de Villers studied at the hypokhagne and khagne preparatory classes before being admitted, in 1988, to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, in the painting department, where he worked in the studios of Alberola and Boltanski. Although he had no prior experience of ceramics, he nevertheless made a radical shift towards this discipline in 2008, encouraged by the supportive guidance of the ceramist Georges Jeanclos. Having been noticed in 2008 at the Vallauris International Ceramics Biennale, he caught the attention of gallery owner Pierre-Marie Giraud, who offered him a solo exhibition in Brussels in 2009. He subsequently exhibited alongside Betty Woodman, Sterling Ruby and Daniel Buren, notably at the Pierre-Marie Giraud Gallery (Brussels, 2010 and 2013) and the Patricia Dorfman Gallery (Felix Culpa, Paris, 2014). Whilst in residence at Sèvres from 2012 to 2014, Raphaël de Villers created around fifteen unique sculptures,
combining stoneware and porcelain. A true painter of materials, Raphaël de Villers has explored, with intensity and virtuosity, the chromatic effects of the Sèvres laboratory’s palette, which boasts some 1,000 glaze colours.
