5 October 2024 – 18 May 2025
Born on 29 January 1973 in Denmark, Louise Hindsgavl studied at the Ceramics and Glass Department of Kolding Design School, from which she graduated in 1999. She began by designing tableware before turning to contemporary sculpture. Deeply inspired by the Baroque and Rococo styles, Hindsgavl subverts the conventions of the porcelain figurine – traditionally associated with
charming and harmless scenes – to introduce unsettling scenarios and monstrous creatures. Drawing on mythology and fables, she explores the grey areas of human behaviour, oscillating between innocence and cruelty, delicacy and brutality. Since 2020, she has also been creating stoneware sculptures, which share the formal language of her porcelain figures whilst introducing
a more experimental dimension to her work with glaze. Her work has earned her numerous honours, including the Prince Eugen Medal for artistic excellence,
awarded by the Royal Court of Sweden in 2015. She exhibits widely in Denmark and abroad, notably at the Vallauris International Ceramics Biennale in 2010, and her works are held in the collections of the New Carlsberg Foundation, the Danish Arts Foundation, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the National Museum of Sweden in Stockholm.
