Description
Elmar TRENKWALDER WVZ 376 S - 2023 Glazed terracotta Signed, titled and dated on the base 85 × 39 × 17 cm Glazed terracotta; signed, titled and dated on the base 3.47 × 15.36 × 6.70 in. Provenance: Galerie Bernard Jordan, Paris Acquired from the gallery by the current owner Elmar Trenkwalder, a painter, draughtsman and sculptor, was born in 1959 in Austria. He lives and works in Innsbruck, from where he pursues an international career. Working with a wide range of materials and techniques, he makes particularly striking use of ceramics, which he develops into monumental, unexpected and surprising forms. He is represented by the Bernard Jordan Gallery in Paris. Fascinated by hand-modelling, he uses earthenware with great freedom in terms of volume and the application of glaze. His references draw as much on the vocabulary of Gothic art as on the Mannerist forms of the Baroque or popular folklore. His interest in the relationship between frame and image is a recurring theme in his work. From the outset, he enjoyed rapid success with Symbolist-inspired drawings and paintings framed in carpet: his approach thus ran counter to the use of luxurious frames intended to enhance the work. The frame, as a creative element, reappeared in his ceramic work in 1999, often in monumental formats, highlighting the drawing and elevating it to the status of a painting. His talents as a ceramist and his passion for drawing merge in this work to become one and the same. Elmar TRENKWALDER
