Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts, Gerald Schmite spent several years heading up the visual design departments of major fashion houses before devoting himself entirely to a multifaceted artistic practice, combining painting, sculpture, design, photography and scenography. His works bring together disparate aesthetics and playfully subvert their distant classical models; he overturns conventions just as he turns his vases upside down, imbuing their apparent classicism with a provocative sense of unease. His unclassifiable world draws freely from the repertoire of ancient painting and sculpture, all the more to subvert their conventions. Both heirs to ancient art and fiercely dissident, his creations depict a baroque world populated by objects that exaggerate and overflow: bulbous vases brimming with decorative motifs, lamps with unrestrained reliefs, and swirling crucifixes. The use of colour contributes to this flamboyant revival of an imaginary past: deep blues, acid greens and dizzying reds lend a defiant splendour to her timeless earthenware pieces.
