Born in 1995 in Moscow, Apollinaria Broche grew up immersed in the tales of the Brothers Grimm, the poetry of Pushkin and Disney feature films. This blend of Russian and Western influences from her childhood is a source of inspiration she continues to draw upon. Now based in Paris, she trained at the ENSBA in Anne Véronica Janssens’ studio, graduating in 2020, having already exhibited at Antonine Catzéflis’ gallery from 2016 onwards. Working in ceramics and bronze, Broche constructs parallel landscapes where fantastical flowers, mutant creatures and body fragments interact within a world that evokes both light and shadow. A residency in Japan has recently introduced her to new glazing techniques and the symbolic language of Japanese gardens and floral calendars, which have enriched a vocabulary already informed by the ancient symbolism of flowers. Her work has also extended into fashion, with a notable collaboration on the Acne Studios Autumn–Winter 2021 collection, for which she developed her own glazes to achieve the metallic patina effect characteristic of her pieces. With exhibitions in Paris, Brussels, Milan, Tokyo and New York (Marianne Boesky Gallery), Apollinaria Broche is represented in several major Moscow collections, including the Garage Museum and the Moscow Museum of Modern Art.
