Basile Boon is a Belgian artist who, after completing a Master’s degree in architecture at La Cambre in Brussels, quickly turned his hand to leather goods and subsequently to ceramics. Driven by a need to create with his own hands, he uses clay as a means of expression that sets him free, allowing his imagination to take centre stage. His works, somewhere between a mineral theatre and a mythological fresco, blend childhood memories, ancient myths, sacred art and popular culture. Inspired by the labyrinthine paintings of the Flemish Primitives and the hallucinatory visions of Hieronymus Bosch, he populates his ceramic frescoes with small baroque monsters, hybrid creatures and guardian figures drawn from the medieval bestiary or the Greek, Asian and Mesopotamian pantheons. Each piece is hand-crafted with meticulous attention to detail and texture, glazed and then fired at a high temperature to ensure its durability.
