Born in 1996 in Philadelphia, Jolie Ngo is an American interdisciplinary artist of Vietnamese origin, now based in Santa Barbara, California. A graduate with a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, she went on to complete an MFA at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Her approach stems from an unexpected encounter with 3D ceramic printing, which she discovered during the pandemic whilst completing her studies: unable to access a studio, she continued to create by sending digital files to be printed and fired, before taking over the pieces once they had been shaped. This fusion of craftsmanship and digital technology has become the hallmark of her work: kaleidoscopic objects, with surfaces covered in hand-painted patterns and colour gradients reminiscent of screen aesthetics, where ceramic tradition engages with emerging technologies. Her formal vocabulary also draws on her Vietnamese heritage: the faceted forms are reminiscent of traditional silk lanterns, whilst certain layered textures evoke rice paddies seen from the sky. Initially centred on vases, her practice has expanded to include lighting and sculptural furniture. Winner of the Peter S. Reed Grant (2022) and the Maxwell/Hanrahan Award in Craft (2025), Jolie Ngo’s work has been exhibited and acquired by several institutions, including the Museum of Arts and Design, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Everson Museum of Art and the Rhode Island School of Design Museum. Her work has also been featured in T Magazine, Elle Déco, Architectural Digest and Galerie Magazine.
