Born in 1974, Grégoire Scalabre discovered ceramics at the age of 10, in the throwing and modelling workshop at the boarding school where he was a pupil. At the age of 16, he began an apprenticeship at the Atelier du Sage in Dieulefit, in the Drôme, a training programme he supplemented with theoretical studies at the Longchamp Ceramics College. Inspired by architecture, design and France’s monumental heritage, Scalabre has developed a constantly evolving repertoire of forms, ranging from dispersion and accumulation to monumentality. His residency at the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres, from 2010 to 2013, marked a turning point: there he began a project centred on accumulation, creating a colossal work, *Astrée*, covered with thousands of miniature porcelain amphorae, each individually hand-thrown on the potter’s wheel. This approach definitively distanced him from the utilitarian aspect of ceramics, allowing him to embrace a fully sculptural ambition. His works feature in numerous public and private collections, notably at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the Manufacture de Sèvres, and he is represented by the Todd Merrill Gallery in New York. In 2022, he was awarded the Liliane Bettencourt Prize for ‘Intelligence of the Hand’, in the ‘Exceptional Talents’ category, for his work *The Ultimate Metamorphosis of Thetis*.
