Born in 1957 in Grenoble, Frédérique Fleury lives and works in Lyon and Aigueperse in the Haut Beaujolais region. She studied at the Écoles des Beaux-Arts in Aix-en-Provence and Lyon. Her work explores space and its boundaries, the frame and its overflow. Her compositions oscillate between geometry and exuberant forms; colour and pattern, combined with an examination of hierarchies in art – major versus minor – that transcends traditional divisions such as fine art versus decorative art. In some works, she combines textiles and sewing with ceramics, creating a dialogue between their materials and techniques. In her stoneware sculptures, volumes come together or reveal openings. Braids, sinuous lines and repeated reliefs enliven the surfaces, sometimes evoking seams or ornamentation. These forms invite the eye to wander and discover the relationship between solids, voids and details.
In her black stoneware pieces, the material reveals a range of shades. The mattness of the raw clay contrasts with the lustre of the glazed sections, which catch the light depending on the viewing angle. This play of reflections may bring to mind Pierre Soulages’ ‘Outrenoirs’, whilst forming part of a sculptural language in which Frédérique Fleury uses black as a canvas for exploring forms, textures and light.
