Pol Chambost is a leading figure in 20th-century French ceramics, emblematic of the style of the 1950s. Trained in sculpture at the École des Arts Appliqués in Paris, he began his career in the family business of funeral marblework in Ivry-sur-Seine before devoting himself to ceramics in 1932. After being wounded during the Second World War, he turned his attention to decorative and functional earthenware, championing the idea of reconciling ‘the beautiful and the useful’. His work from the 1950s is characterised by fluid, biomorphic and curvilinear forms, often in two colours and playing on contrasts in texture. His pieces were sold in prestigious department stores such as Galeries Lafayette and Le Bon Marché, or through his collaboration with Colette Gueden at Primavera. They even feature in Jacques Tati’s film *Mon oncle* (1958). A technical innovator, he was the first in France to use a large-capacity electric kiln, enabling mass production whilst maintaining high standards of craftsmanship.Today, his creations remain highly sought-after by collectors and continue to inspire, as evidenced by Raf Simons’ Jil Sander collection in 2009.
