Born in 1981 in Los Angeles, where he still lives and works, Grant Levy-Lucero discovered ceramics through the artist Laura Owens, whose studio was next to his own. Before turning his hand to clay, he practised knitting and textile work – a similarity in technique that he finds in his ‘colombin’ method, in which he winds a long strand of extruded clay to build his pieces, much like knitting a jumper. Taking ancient Greek and Roman vases as his starting point, Levy-Lucero shapes oversized vases which he adorns, in glossy paint, with hand-painted logos and symbols drawn from the advertising landscape of Los Angeles — breakfast cereals, dog food, luxury brands. This pop iconography—naive and full of humour—resonates with the irregular surface of the hand-finished clay, whilst playfully questioning the history of sculpture and the hierarchies of artistic value. His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at White Columns (New York), Night Gallery (Los Angeles), VNH Gallery (Paris) and Woaw Gallery (Hong Kong), and has been featured in collaborations with brands such as Acne Studios and Bergdorf Goodman.
